RugMark - A Day in the Life

Former child worker, Yubaraj Ghalan, 17, now works at the Motorcycle Workshop in Kathmandu

"RugMark gives orphans and helpless children love and security. It also gives us education, which is vital, as through education we can do anything."

My name is Yubaraj Ghalan. I am 17 years old and I am from Hadiya village in the Makawanpur district - a remote hilly region in the Central Development Region about 300 km from Kathmandu.

I am working at the Motorcycle Workshop in Kathmandu, - this is thanks to RugMark. My family is very poor and when I was much younger I had to work in a rug factory as a child labourer. I was illiterate and in a terrible condition. The RugMark Foundation found me, then gave me my education and training, got me my job here and sorted out my accommodation.

My life now is very good. I am independent and work at the repair shop servicing and repairing motorcycles - I work hard to support my family. My working day runs from 9 am to 7pm, with a 3 hour break at lunchtime. My food and board is provided by my employer and when I get home, I can do whatever I like - shop, cook or watch TV; it is my time.

RugMark gives orphans and helpless children love and security. It also gives us education, which is vital, as through education we can do anything.
